PET/CT
Hunterdon Imaging, P.A. is proud to announce the expansion of PET services with PET/CT. This new technology combines two different types of imaging into one procedure. This equipment is a new imaging tool that is highly advanced by combining the premier technology from PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography). PET/CT is a very good tool for early and accurate tumor detection, as well as coronary artery disease and some neurological disorders. A very small amount of radioactive “tracer” (radionuclide or radioisotope) is injected into the vein. The radioactive “tracer” is tagged to a form of sugar that is used for energy by all cells in the body. Areas of abnormally high uptake of the “tracer” appear as brighter areas on the scan. This shows how far cancer has spread, how cancer is responding to treatment and also can help your doctor decide the best treatment for you.

We request that you arrive for your exam 30 minutes prior to your scheduled exam. Most exams require that you do not eat six hours prior to the procedure. You will be given instructions specific to your procedure by the center scheduling staff when making the appointment. They can be reached at 866-235-7226. Please advise the scheduling staff if you are diabetic when making the appointment as well as what type of medications you take to control your diabetes. Diabetic patients will have special scheduling and procedure preparations for the procedure. A glucose serum blood test may be taken on diabetic patients before the procedure. Please avoid wearing clothes that have metal snaps, buckles or zippers, it is best to wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing. Prior to your procedure, we strong urge you to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have.

About the Exam
When you arrive for your exam, once your paperwork has been completed, the PET/CT technologist will escort you to the mobile PET/CT unit, which is located on the Hunterdon Medical Center campus. You will be asked to change into a gown and a licensed technologist will administer the radioactive injection “tracer”. You will rest comfortably in a quiet room for up to 1 hour in order to give the “tracer” time to distribute through your body. You will be asked to empty your bladder just before the procedure begins. The PET/CT technologist will assist you onto a comfortable table where you will lie during the procedure. The table is connected to the PET/CT scanner. There is no sound produced when the scanner is in operation and the scanner is open on both ends. The table will move in small increments during the scan, allowing images to be taken of multiple areas of your body. You may feel a slight gliding movement as the table moves through the scanner. The PET/CT technologist will be in constant communication with you during the exam. The PET/CT technologist will be present in a nearby room for the entire procedure. The entire procedure generally takes approximately 3 hours. Once your exam is completed, a Board Certified radiologist will dictate the study and send the results to your doctor generally within 48 hours.

Hunterdon Imaging, P.A. is ACR accredited in PET/CT and participates in the National Oncologic PET Registry.
